The Client

The Princess Royal Hospital, in Haywards Heath, West Sussex is run and managed by the Sussex Community NHS Trust, which is the main provider of community health services across West Sussex

The Requirement

It is essential for the Princess Royal Hospital that their life critical medical equipment and communications and IT systems are kept operational at all times, regardless of fluctuations or outages in grid power.

However the Trust's brief included not only a power supply to support the Princess Royal's extensive operational infrastructure, but also the capability to autonomously monitor and manage the power supply, with minimal staff distraction, in order to leave them free to look after the health of their patients.

Our Solution

To fulfil their specific requirements we decided the best solution was a Riello MDM 1500, a UPS unit with online double conversion topology. This is an industry-leading UPS; not only does it provide optimum power density, but it also guarantees the life of its battery through a specialised design, which incorporates digital control technology to protect the system from overheating or overvoltage.

The Riello's focus on system preservation, alongside its considerable power density and self diagnostic capability (including automated battery testing) meant that it was the perfect solution for the Princess Royal.

To fulfil the second part of the client's brief we provided the Princess Royal with our Class 2E service and maintenance contract. This includes an 8-hour response to site and one annual maintenance visit. We also included TeleNetGuard Remote UPS Monitoring into the contract. This service periodically connects with the hospital's UPS, reviewing the system's status. If an error is detected, TeleNetGuard reports the situation, which triggers the dispatch of an engineer to the site if required. In this way, we ensured the Riello's complete autonomy.

We've supported Sussex Community NHS Trust since 2005 and help them to provide the best healthcare service to their local communities
