Butterworth Laboratories is an analytical contractor to the pharmaceutical industry.

The Requirement

Butterworth Laboratories need to run state-of-the-art testing equipment and apparatus, alongside a network of PCs and mid-range servers that host essential software, applications and programs which requires protection from problems in grid power.

In this instance they needed a solution that could act as an interface between grid power and their PC network ,to safeguard it from potential damage caused by fluctuations in supply. They also needed to protect their two mid-range servers from the consequences of under- or overvoltage, and a way in which these could be managed safely and effectively if they were compromised by a power problem.

Our Solution

To fulfil their brief we supplied them with an APC Smart-UPS 2200VA, an Uninterruptible Power Supply unit of line-interactive topology. This UPS monitors the quality of the input power supply by using a microprocessor, which reacts to fluctuations by activating a voltage compensation circuit to either boost or reduce the supply voltage so delivering a steady and consistent flow of power.

This fulfilled their basic requirement but to deliver exceptional functionality we integrated innovative PowerChute software into their new UPS. This provided effective management of the unit's capabilities, including its energy usage. However, PowerChute's most important function from the client's point of view was its ability to perform unattended safe shutdown of equipment in the event of an extended power outage. This meant that Butterworth's servers were safeguarded against fluctuation damage by the 2200VA, whilst also being supervised by PowerChute in a way that minimised the risk of data corruption or loss. This blend of practicality and protection meant that even without continuous power protection, Butterworth Laboratories could depend on the 2200VA to effectively and consistently safeguard their equipment.
